Chick Hatching in schools
Running over the spring term
we are offering schools around the Ripon and Harrogate area the opportunity to incubate, hatch and care for our beloved new farm chicks.
What says ‘Spring is here’ more than new born animal?! New life is part of everyday life on our farm, and it is so magical being able to witness animals being born.
At Bland Close Farm we incubate and hatch our own chicks, and we love being able to educate about chick life cycles and incorporate chick handling into our visits from schools. It is often one of the highlights!
This year we are so excited to be able to offer this magical experience to schools, so that children can watch the hatching happening right in front of their eyes!
What’s included?
•Delivery and pick up of up to 7 fertilised eggs, incubator, brooder box, chick feed, information leaflet and helpline number.
•Eggs and equipment will be dropped off on Monday, the chicks should hatch between Wednesday and Friday of the same week.
•You can then keep and care for the new born chicks for up to 2 weeks before we pick them up and take them back to the farm where they will be cared for and raised.
What do you as a school need to provide?
All we ask from you is access to an electrical supply (1 socket), fresh water to top up the incubator and a class of enthusiastic children excited witness this magical moment and care for the newly hatched chicks!
What is the cost?
All of this for £180 + VAT
What happens to the chicks after their time in the classroom?
A member of farm staff will collect your chicks at the prearranged time and return them to the farm, they will then live in our 'chick hut' barn before moving outside when they are fully feathered. The chicks will become part of the farm family and be enjoyed and cared for by our farm visitors. Alternatively, our chicks and chicken are available to purchase for people who are interested in keeping chickens and enjoy the delights of freshly laid eggs.
